December 2, 2011. Monterey, CA. The 76th Annual Monterey County Fair, which will be held August 29-September 3 (Labor Day), 2012  has announced the winner of its Theme Contest for the 2012 Monterey County Fair . The contest required the submitted slogan to incorporate a “Berry” theme in recognition of the important role that agriculture and berries play in the Monterey County Region.  The winning theme, which was submitted by 12-year old Trent Baldwin, is “Very Berry Extraordinary!”

The winner of the 2012 Monterey County Fair’s Poster Art contest is Sand City-based artist, Margie Anderson. Using a mixed media of watercolor and acrylic, Margie painted some of her favorite parts of the Monterey County Fair, including the 4H kids and animals, quilts, canned goods and many more fun images from the Fair. She feels that the Monterey County Fair is a wonderful place for the community to show off and appreciate each other’s talents.

Prior to moving to Sand City in 2009, Margie and her husband, Dave Anderson, a teacher for 35 years at Robert H. Down Elementary School, lived in Pacific Grove and Monterey. Dave taught 3rd and 4th grade students and Margie taught many art classes at the school. Over the years, Margie has been a sought-after artist due to her talent and she loves to help children develop their own artistic skills. Margie has taken art classes at Monterey Peninsula College and has often participated in the West End Celebration in Sand City.  Art is a passion and a love for her and she has painted since she was a young child in Chicago. THE MONTEREY COUNTY FAIR INVITES THE COMMUNITY TO RECYCLE THEIR ELECTRONIC WASTE ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH

October 15, 2011, Monterey, CA. The Monterey County Fair is again teaming up with Electronic Recyclers to Offer Residents a Convenient, Local Drop-Off Location for “e-waste”.

WHAT: On Sunday, October 30th, the Monterey County Fair will be holding a free electronic waste collection event.  The collection will provide residents with an opportunity to safely unload their old computers, television sets, monitors and other out-dated, unusable or unwanted electronic items for proper recycling from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The public should enter through Gate 8 on Fairgrounds Road to conveniently drop off their items.

It is illegal to simply throw an old television or computer monitor in the trash in the state of California.  Electronic items have toxic elements like lead and mercury in them that are environmentally hazardous when they are dumped into landfills.  By law, such products must now be recycled properly and in ways that won’t harm the environment.

In an attempt to help residents and the environment, the Monterey County Fair has become proactive in its efforts to collect electronic waste.  The electronics collected will then be trucked away and recycled by Fresno-based Electronic Recyclers, the largest recycler of electronic waste in California and the Fair’s partner for this event.  The collection is designed to provide local businesses and schools with an easy way to get rid of their old electronics.

“We’re extremely proud to continue our partnership with the historic Monterey County Fair for this special program,” said John S. Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers.  “The Monterey County Fair is helping residents become more environmentally responsible by offering them a convenient opportunity to safely dispose of their old electronics.”

Each year in California, hundreds of thousands of computers, copiers, fax machines, printers, televisions and other electronic items are replaced by newer, more advanced equipment.   It is estimated that up to 75 percent of these outdated electronics are in storage because people don't know what to do with them.

WHERE:    Gate 8, Monterey County Fair, 2004 Fairgrounds Road, Monterey, CA

WHEN:   Sunday, October 30th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

CONTACTS: For more information please call the fair office at 831-372-5863
